I'd like to share the truth about what causes alcoholism and addiction because quite frankly, the United States of America is faced with an epidemic.

23.5 million persons aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol abuse problem in 2009 (9.3 percent of persons aged 12 or older). - drugabuse.gov

The Effects of Heavy Metals

It is worth noting that there are many chemical anomalies (i.e., causes) in the chemistry of alcoholics and drug addicts. The accumulation of toxic heavy metals is just one of them, but it’s a big one.

In human beings, the behavioral effects of lead, mercury, cadmium, aluminum, arsenic, and many other lesser known toxic metals is well studied.1 Toxic metals have a profound influence on the brain and how it emotes.

Over years, as these toxins accumulate in the brain, they bring on:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • anger
  • fatigue
  • impaired
  • cognitive function
  • impaired immune function

In addition, the gradual build-up of metals brings on suicidal and homicidal ideation.

When the awareness of life becomes too despairing, is it any wonder that the relief afforded with alcohol or drugs is welcomed as an appealing strategy for reclaiming some of the joy that has been lost?

Orthomolecular Medicine - Alternative Addiction Treatment

Whether it's alcohol, drugs or prescription drugs, the number of people suffering from addiction is staggering. In order to fix this epidemic, we must first understand that the basis of all addiction is forged in the biochemistry of the alcoholic/addict, not in their mind.

Therefore, effective addiction treatment requires identifying and correcting chemistry in order to stabilize the brain.

Once the brain has been stabilized the behavior changes will start to follow automatically. In essence, we are treating the root cause of addiction, which then gives us the added benefit of having the symptoms change.

Nevertheless, this helps to explain why relapse among addicts treated solely with standard psycho-spiritual therapy often repeatedly fail to end their addiction. Traditional chemical addiction treatment centers focus solely on aberrant behavior and psychological motivations to explain why people fall into the addictive pattern of use, and never address the true underlying cause of the physical addiction.

Conclusion

Main-stream psycho-spiritual "standard practice of care" treatment is missing the key element of what causes addiction. Those of us in the field of Orthomolecular Medicine understand the need and desire for community and support from your peers, but we also know from our 35 years of helping people, that in order to end the cycle of addiction there must first be biochemical repair.
