Health Recovery Center is the first orthomolecular program in the United States. Since our founding in 1981, our intensive outpatient addiction recovery program has offered a natural and guilt-free recovery alternative. A peer-reviewed study of our program reported that, up to 3.5 years after graduation, 74% of program participants remained sober. Compare that to 12-step programs that consistently show no better than a 25% sobriety rate one year after graduation, which decreases to a 7% sobriety rate four years after.
A Healthy Alternative to 12-Step Programs
Though traditional 12-step drug recovery programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, were revolutionary at the time of their inception, their inherent structural flaws make true biochemical and psychological recovery impossible.
12-step programs require the struggling individuals to put the fate of their medical conditions outside the realm of their own control. Addicts are rendered unable to take responsibility for their own healing processes.
Paradoxically, too, these programs also place guilt and fault on the addict themselves instead of what is truly to blame for this disease: faulty brain chemistry. You wouldn’t blame somebody for having stomach cancer, so why should self-blame be imposed on somebody who suffers from a very real disease of the brain?
Alcoholism and drug addictions are not moral failings, but they are medical conditions that an individual must take responsibility to heal. 12-step programs do not facilitate the mindset required for recovery, nor do they acknowledge the very real chemical imbalances in the brain that cause addiction.
Health Recovery Center’s approach was shaped to allow addicts to see their conditions as both biochemically induced and within their control. Learn more about our approach here.
