Vitamin B3 (Niacin and Niacinamide)
Niacin deficiency disease is known as Pellagra characterized by the 4 Ds: Dermatitis, Diarrhea, Dementia, and Death—in addition, deficiencies cause.

  • Malaise
  • Tremors
  • Sore and/or swollen tongue
  • Sensitivity to light

Bill Wilson (cofounder of AA) was introduced to megavitamin therapy by Abram Hoffer and Humphree Osmond back in1960. Bill W. took 3 grams of niacin daily and within a few weeks the fatigue and depression that had plagued him for many years were gone.

Niacin plays an important role in the maintenance of the circulatory system and prostaglandin balance. It is recognized as having profound applications in the treatment of brain and mental disorders. Its interesting to note B3 treatment has been used successfully to treat some forms of schizophrenia; pellegra, dermatitis and diarrhea resemble schizophrenia in the early stages.

Biochemically speaking, the body regards niacin as a more important substance than serotonin or melatonin; consequently, sleep disorders can occur when serotonin and melatonin production are reduced due to making use of L-Tryptophan for the conversion to niacin rather than other important brain molecules.

Niacin is also important in treating low histamine, pyroluria, cerebral allergies, and sugar metabolism imbalances.

Niacin has been used to treat and correct:

  • Learning disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Hyperactivity
  • Insomnia
  • Aggression
  • Neurosis
  • Depression
  • Addictions
  • Alcoholism
  • Senility
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Convulsions
  • Loss of Sense of Humor

In addition Niacin has been shown effective in:

  • Lowering of high cholesterol while elevating HDL. (Use regular or time released niacin for this effect. Do not use a no-flush niacin. )
  • The therapeutic treating of schizophrenia (4 double blind studies and over 50 papers published in medical literature have documented the benefits of niacin for schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions).
  • Learning and behavior disorders among children
  • Drug addiction (B3 is a good antidote against LSD intoxication)
  • Alcoholism
  • Some states of senility
  • The treatment of physical maladies:
    • Helps to improve and accelerate healing
    • Useful in the treatment and prevention of arthritis
    • Useful in the prevention of juvenile diabetes

Niacin deficiency ha been associated with:

  • Paranoia
  • Weakness
  • Irritability
  • Apprehension
  • High Cholesterol
  • Sensitivity to Light
  • Ringing in the Ears

B3 is available in several forms: Regular Niacin, No-flush Niacin (Inositol Hexaniacinate), Niacinamide. It is important to know if you take regular niacin you will most likely have a flush/blush reaction (A. Hoffer said schizophrenics are often the exception). The flush/blush usually ends in less than an hour. Over time, continual use
of regular niacin will cease to have this effect. In most cases a no flush niacin will work as effectively without the uncomfortable flush. There are exceptions however:

  • When trying to knockout a migraine headache
  • When trying to open capillaries to detoxify from nicotine (Regular niacin causes blood vessels to dilate).

* The Niacin flush

Niacin flushes come in various intensities from mild to severe. It starts at the forehead with a warming tingle and intensifies. From there, the tingle travels down the rest of the body, stopping anywhere between the chest to the toes. With continued use, the flush gradually lessens until only a mild tingling in the forehead may be detected. If you skip your niacin for a day or two, the flush will reappear. Many factors can influence the flush
reaction, so its difficult to predict what your experience will be like.

Factors that decrease the intensity of a flush include:

  • a cold meal
  • taking niacin on a full stomach
  • taking aspirin or an antihistamine prior to taking niacin

Factors that increase the intensity of a flush include:

  • a hot meal or a hot drink
  • Taking niacin on an empty stomach
  • chewing the tablets, helping them break down faster
